Global Context-Aware Progressive Aggregation Network for Salient Object Detection

Deep convolutional neural networks have achieved competitive performance in salient object detection, in which how to learn effective and comprehensive features plays a critical role. Most of the previous works mainly adopted multiple level feature integration yet ignored the gap between different features. Besides, there also exists a dilution process of high-level features as they passed on the top-down pathway. To remedy these issues, we propose a novel network named GCPANet to effectively integrate low-level appearance features, high-level semantic features, and global context features through some progressive context-aware Feature Interweaved Aggregation (FIA) modules and generate the saliency map in a supervised way. Moreover, a Head Attention (HA) module is used to reduce information redundancy and enhance the top layers features by leveraging the spatial and channel-wise attention, and the Self Refinement (SR) module is utilized to further refine and heighten the input features. Furthermore, we design the Global Context Flow (GCF) module to generate the global context information at different stages, which aims to learn the relationship among different salient regions and alleviate the dilution effect of high-level features. Experimental results on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively

Smart Communication Satellite (SCS) is the first low earth orbit (LEO) mobile communication test satellite of China, whose core mission is to conduct technical exploration and verification for building satellite internet. Launched in September, 2014, SCS completed its whole on-orbit experiments in October, 2014. In order to resolve the contradiction between the coverage area and communication rate of LEO communication satellites, SCS adopts on- board smart antenna, whereby dynamically changing spot beams can be formed. Moreover, SCS has developed payload-centered satellite design technique as well as internet-oriented software satellite technique, and finally accomplished the design for application-oriented micro-satellite which is 100Kg-class weighted and applicable to communication and navigation services. The innovative techniques of SCS verify the new direction of development in the future satellite internet

Background: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant challenges to health system and consumed a lot of health resources. However, evidence on the hospitalization costs and their associated factors in COVID-19 cases is scarce. Objectives: To describe the total and components of hospitalization costs of COVID-19 cases, and investigate the associated factors of costs. Methods: We included 876 confirmed COVID-19 cases admitted to 33 designated hospitals from January 15th to April 27th, 2020 in Guangdong, China, and collected their demographic and clinical information. A multiple linear regression model was performed to estimate the associations of hospitalization costs with potential associated factors. Results: The median of total hospitalization costs of COVID-19 cases was 2,869.4(IQR:2,869.4 (IQR: 3,916.8). We found higher total costs in male (% difference: 29.7, 95% CI: 15.5, 45.6) than in female cases, in older cases than in younger ones, in severe cases (% difference: 344.8, 95% CI: 222.5, 513.6) than in mild ones, in cases with clinical aggravation than those without, in cases with clinical symptoms (% difference: 47.7, 95% CI: 26.2, 72.9) than those without, and in cases with comorbidities (% difference: 21.1%, 21.1, 95% CI: 4.4, 40.6) than those without. We also found lower non-pharmacologic therapy costs in cases treated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy (% difference: −47.4, 95% CI: −64.5 to −22.0) than cases without. Conclusion: The hospitalization costs of COVID-19 cases in Guangdong were comparable to the national level. Factors associated with higher hospitalization costs included sex, older age, clinical severity and aggravation, clinical symptoms and comorbidities at admission. TCM therapy was found to be associated with lower costs for some non-pharmacologic therapies

Effect of stacking fault energy and austenite strengthening on martensitic transformation in Fe-Mn-Si alloys

In the Fe-Mn-Si alloys with very low stacking fault energy (γ0\gamma_0), the γ\gamma(fcc)→\to(hcp) martensitic transformation substantially relies on an overlapping-of-stacking-faults mechanism. γ0\gamma_0 strongly influences its MsM_s temperature. MsM_s gets lowered when γ0\gamma_0 increases. It has been shown that both Mn and Si strengthen the austenitic matrix. However, Mn in a certain concentration range raises γ0\gamma_0 of the alloy and thus lowers its MsM_s while Si acts in the other way around. Carefully summarizing and treating the available theoretical and experimental data, an analytical expression is established to describe the MsM_s as a function of γ0\gamma_0 and the strengthening effect that is related with the strain energy. The results show that stacking fault energy plays an overwhelming role on the transformation in such alloys, even though the austenite strengthening also lowers MsM_s to some extent

Confined 1D Propulsion of Metallodielectric Janus Micromotors on Microelectrodes under Alternating Current Electric Fields

© 2019 American Chemical Society. There is mounting interest in synthetic microswimmers ("micromotors") as microrobots as well as a model system for the study of active matters, and spatial navigation is critical for their success. Current navigational technologies mostly rely on magnetic steering or guiding with physical boundaries, yet limitations with these strategies are plenty. Inspired by an earlier work with magnetic domains on a garnet film as predefined tracks, we present an interdigitated microelectrodes (IDE) system where, upon the application of AC electric fields, metallodielectric (e.g., SiO2-Ti) Janus particles are hydrodynamically confined and electrokinetically propelled in one dimension along the electrode center lines with tunable speeds. In addition, comoving micromotors moved in single files, while those moving in opposite directions primarily reoriented and moved past each other. At high particle densities, turbulence-like aggregates formed as many-body interactions became complicated. Furthermore, a micromotor made U-turns when approaching an electrode closure, while it gradually slowed down at the electrode opening and was collected in large piles. Labyrinth patterns made of serpentine chains of Janus particles emerged by modifying the electrode configuration. Most of these observations can be qualitatively understood by a combination of electroosmotic flows pointing inward to the electrodes, and asymmetric electrical polarization of the Janus particles under an AC electric field. Emerging from these observations is a strategy that not only powers and confines micromotors on prefabricated tracks in a contactless, on-demand manner, but is also capable of concentrating active particles at predefined locations. These features could prove useful for designing tunable tracks that steer synthetic microrobots, as well as to enable the study of single file diffusion, active turbulence, and other collective behaviors of active matters11sciescopu

Effect of Nitrogen Addition on Shape Memory Characteristics of Fe-Mn-Si-Cr Alloy

Nitrogen-microalloying and partial substitution of Cr for Mn have been employed to enhance the shape memory effect and corrosion resistance of Fe-Mn-Si based alloys. Typically, the tested alloys with nominal composition Fe-25Mn-6Si-5Cr-(0.12-0.14)N in mass% exhibit perfect shape recovery for a 3% pre-strain after only one cycle of thermomechanical training. The related mechanism has been discussed, taking account of the effect of nitrogen on the stacking fault energy (SFE) or the stacking fault probability (P sf ) of the alloy and the strengthening of the austenite matrix. Thermodynamic calculation and P sf measurement showed that the SFE increases with increasing N-content in the concentration range investigated, e.g. less than 0.3 mass%. Thus, the critical stress for the formation of stress-induced martensite increases with N-content. It is believed that the interstitial strengthening of the matrix by nitrogen predominantly contributes to the improvement of shape memory effect. Besides, nitrogen-microalloying remarkably improves the corrosion resistance of the alloys in aqueous solutions containing NaOH and NaCl, but not in HCl solution as indicated by the long-term immersion tests

Abstract Polystyrene intercalated graphite oxide (GO) nanocomposite was prepared by emulsion polymerization reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was shown that polystyrene can be intercalated into the interlayer space of GO and form exfoliated and intercalated nanocomposites. The thermal analysis demonstrated that the presence of GO enhances the char residue of the nanocomposite.
